French hypermarket chain Carrefour has exited Oman, just a few months after closing all its branches in Jordan.

The company announced on its official Instagram page that it had ceased operations in the country as of January 7.

“On behalf of Carrefour management and employees, we extend our sincere gratitude for your continuous support over the past decades,” the company said.

According to Gulf Business, Carrefour Oman is operated by UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim (MAF), which has held exclusive rights to the brand in the Middle East and North Africa since 1995.

Carrefour previously shut down its business in Jordan in early November, as MAF launched its fully-owned retail brand, Hypermax, in the country. Some reports suggest that MAF will also rebrand the Carrefour chain to Hypermax in Oman.

Carrefour had stores in key locations in Oman such as City Centre Muscat, City Centre Qurm, and the Mall of Oman, as well as smaller outlets in Muscat Grand Mall and Oasis Mall.

While the chain did not state the reason behind its departure, local media outlets said that the chain has faced boycott campaigns as it was accused of having commercial ties to Israel.
