New research from Checkout has shown a dramatic shift toward online shopping in the MENA region, especially in the UAE and KSA markets, over the past five years.

According to the study, daily online shopping in the MENA region has surged 139 per cent since 2020, led by a 320 per cent increase in the UAE and 300 per cent uplift in Saudi Arabia. Weekly and monthly online shopping have also seen strong upward trends across the region.

The diversity of online shopping has expanded from only well-known categories like retail, electronics, and beauty to garden furniture, cars, medical healthcare treatments, and cultural experiences.

The research also highlighted that around one third of consumers in the UAE and KSA now use ecommerce as a mainstream channel.

“With the convenience of fast, secure transactions and personalized experiences, shopping online has become a habitual part of life for many,” commented Remo Giovanni Abbondandolo, GM of MENA at Checkout.

“This shift is driven by factors such as time-saving, easy access to a wide range of products, and the seamless nature of digital payment systems, making frequent purchases not just a convenience but an expected part of modern consumer behaviour.”

Looking ahead, the researchers forecast digital commerce to continue its upward trajectory in the MENA region, with approximately 61 per cent of consumers planning to increase their online shopping next year.

Management consulting firm Imarc has also released its research highlighting a 20.5 per cent CAGR outlook for the UAE online grocery market during 2025-2033.

The growth is attributed to more people using digital services and changing shopping habits, according to the report.
